Ayurveda, the oldest living system of medicine, is founded on the holistic understanding of health, disease, and therapeutics. Unlike conventional systems that often focus solely on the pharmacological action of a drug, Ayurveda gives equal importance to the quality, suitability, and method of procurement of medicinal substances. In this context, the classical concept of Grahya Agrahyata occupies a pivotal position in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics and Dravyaguna Vigyana. It provides a systematic framework for determining whether a medicinal plant or its part is acceptable (Grahya) for therapeutic use or unacceptable (Agrahya) due to defects that may compromise safety or efficacy. The Sanskrit terms Grahya and Agrahya literally mean “that which should be accepted” and “that which should be rejected,” respectively. These terms encompass a wide range of qualitative and contextual parameters rather than mere botanical identification.
