About The Book

The media industry is not merely a field of communication; it is a dynamic business environment where creativity, technology, management, economics, law, and public responsibility intersect. Over the past fifteen years of my professional journey in the media industry, I have had the opportunity to observe, experience, and understand the changing nature of media organisations and the managerial challenges associated with them. This book is an effort to bring those experiences together in a structured and accessible form for students, aspiring media professionals, educators, and anyone interested in understanding the business and management of media.
The purpose of this book is to develop a clear understanding of “The Business of Media: Management, Ownership and Emerging Trends” not only as a theoretical discipline but also as a practical area of professional practice. Effective management is essential for every media organisation, whether it is a newspaper, radio station, television channel, cinema organisation, or a new-media platform. Behind every successful media product lies a complex system of planning, organising, staffing, directing, coordinating, controlling, decision-making, and resource management.
The book begins with the Basics of Management, covering its concepts, definitions, importance, functions, principles, nature, and scope. It then moves towards the specific context of Media Management, examining its features, key components, functions, challenges, required skills, and growing significance. These foundational concepts are followed by an examination of media ownership and business, enabling readers to understand how ownership patterns influence organisational objectives, decision-making, investment, and business strategies.
A separate section focuses on the operations and organisational structures of media organisations, with particular attention to newspapers, radio stations, and television. Understanding these structures is essential for appreciating how different departments work together to produce and distribute media content.
The book also addresses legal concerns related to media businesses, recognizing that media professionals must operate within an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment. In addition, it explores new trends in media, including emerging developments in radio, television, cinema, and the broader transformation brought about by digital technologies.
Finally, the book examines different models of media ownership and business, including family-owned, corporate-owned, and state-owned media. The discussion considers the tensions between tradition and modernisation, profitability and public responsibility, and public service and institutional interests.
This book is the outcome of both professional experience and a continuing desire to understand the rapidly changing media landscape. I have attempted to present concepts in a manner that connects classroom learning with real-world media practices. My intention is not only to provide information but also to encourage readers to think critically about how media organisations are managed, how they respond to change, and how management decisions ultimately influence the media we consume.
I sincerely hope that this book serves as a useful academic and practical resource and helps readers develop a deeper, broader, and more contemporary understanding of Media Management.
